Programmed drums have a particular way of sounding wrong. Not bad exactly — every hit is clean, perfectly in time, nothing is out of tune. And yet the whole kit sits in the mix like a sticker pasted on top of the song rather than something happening in a room with the band.

People usually blame the samples. It is almost never the samples.

The Real Problem: No Shared Space

When a real kit is recorded, every microphone hears every drum. The overheads pick up the kick. The room mics hear everything smeared together. That bleed is what glues a kit into one instrument instead of five separate ones.

A drum VST gives you perfectly isolated channels. Clean, but disconnected. The fix is not more processing on individual drums — it is putting them back into a shared space.

Three Things That Fix It

1. Use the room. Most drum VSTs have a room or ambience channel and most people leave it down. Bring it up until you can clearly hear it, then back off slightly. If your plugin has no room channel, put a short room reverb (0.5–0.8 seconds, no predelay) across the kit bus and blend it in underneath.

2. Bus the whole kit. Route every drum to one group and put a compressor across it doing 2–3 dB of gain reduction with a slow attack. The slow attack matters — it lets the transients through and clamps down on what follows, which is what pulls the kit together into a single moving thing.

3. Parallel crush. Send the drum bus to a second track, compress it brutally — fast attack, high ratio, 10 to 15 dB of gain reduction — then blend that underneath the clean drums. You are not replacing the kit, you are adding weight beneath it. Bring it up until it feels big, then pull back a dB.

Velocity and Timing

If every snare hit is at the same velocity, no amount of mixing saves it. Real drummers hit ghost notes at 30% and backbeats at 100%. Vary your velocities, especially on hi-hats and ghost snares — that variation is most of what your ear reads as "a human played this".

Same with timing. Perfect grid quantisation is a choice, not a requirement. Nudging a few hits a couple of milliseconds off the grid does more for feel than any plugin will.

Where to Actually EQ

Kick and snare are where most of the work is. Kick usually wants weight around 60 Hz, a cut in the mud zone around 400 Hz, and click somewhere near 3.5 kHz so it reads on small speakers. Snare wants body around 200 Hz and crack up around 5 kHz.

Overheads want a high-pass — often as high as 250 Hz. There is nothing useful down there and it is stealing space from your kick. That single move cleans up more drum mixes than anything else I do.

The Thing Nobody Says

Programmed drums that sound real are usually programmed better, not mixed better. Spend twenty minutes on velocities and timing before you spend two hours on plugins. A mix can only enhance what the performance is doing — it cannot invent a performance that is not there.
