You have got a vocal take you are happy with. You drop it into the mix and it vanishes. So you turn it up. Now it is loud but still somehow buried, and also it is shouting at you. Turn it back down and it disappears again.
This is the most common mixing problem there is, and volume is almost never the solution.
The Vocal Is Not Too Quiet — Something Is In Its Way
Your voice lives mostly between 1 and 4 kHz. That is where intelligibility comes from: the consonants, the thing that makes words readable as words.
Unfortunately that is also where electric guitars live. And synth pads. And the top end of a piano. And snare. When those are all present, the vocal has nowhere to sit — and turning it up just makes a louder fight.

Carve, Do Not Boost
Take the instruments that are masking the vocal — usually guitars and keys — and dip them 2 to 3 dB somewhere between 1 and 4 kHz. Wide, gentle, not surgical.
Solo the vocal and the guitar together and sweep until you find where they are colliding. Cut it out of the guitar, not the vocal. Do this on two or three tracks and the vocal will appear without you touching its fader.
The counterintuitive part is that the guitars will not sound worse. On their own they will sound slightly thinner. In the mix, everything sounds clearer — because instruments are no longer competing for the same space.
The Automatic Version: Sidechain Ducking
If you want this to happen only when the vocal is actually singing, sidechain the instruments to the vocal. Put a compressor on the guitar bus, feed it the vocal as an external sidechain, and set it for 1 to 2 dB of gain reduction.
Now the guitars dip fractionally whenever the vocal enters and come back up in the gaps. Nobody hears it happening. Everybody hears the vocal.
Depth, Not Volume
A vocal that feels distant is usually drowning in reverb, not lacking level. Reverb pushes things backwards — that is literally its job.
Two fixes. First, high-pass your reverb return around 250 to 300 Hz and low-pass it around 8 kHz, so the reverb stops muddying the low mids and stops competing with the vocal consonants. Second — and this is the move that makes big vocals sound professional — duck the reverb itself.
Put a compressor last on your reverb return with the dry vocal feeding its sidechain. Ratio around 4:1, fast attack, release somewhere between 150 and 300 ms. Now the reverb gets out of the way while the vocal sings and blooms in the gaps between phrases. Huge sound, every word still clear.
